Independent living is a general name for any housing arrangement designed exclusively for seniors. Other terms include retirement communities, retirement homes, independent senior housing, and senior living apartments. These may be apartment complexes, condominiums, or even free-standing homes. Senior independent living communities generally consist of studios, one-bedrooms, or two-bedroom homes. Included in these homes are a kitchen and a bath. These senior relocation communities are an ideal setting for those who no longer want the burden of household chores and are seeking the benefits of an active social setting. Some appreciable services and amenities of senior living apartments and communities may include housekeeping, maintenance, meal plans, transportation, valet, companion services, paid utilities, cable television, emergency call systems and activities/events.
There are different types of independent senior housing options you may choose from:
- Rental communities typically offer leases that renew annually and require a monthly payment.
- Entry Fee communities require a fee up front and a smaller monthly fee and provide healthcare benefits and a life care guarantee. Some offer only independent living services while others, called Continuing Care Retirement Communities (CCRCs), offer multiple care options – all on the same property.
You may want to consider independent living if:
- You see needing minor assistance with activities of daily living.
- Assistance is not needed for medications, dressing, hygiene, or bathing.
- You’d like a place that does not require a lot of maintenance and upkeep, and is easier to navigate.
- You like the idea of socializing with peers and having activity options nearby.
